Pantone Colour of the Year 2013: EMERALD

Emerald. It’s what gave the capital city of Oz its signature tint, Elizabeth Taylor her sparkle and Roman emperor Nero improved eyesight. Every year, Pantone polls designers and brands about colours they’re featuring to aid in its decision for what hue will tinge the next 12 months. For 2013, the company has bestowed the distinction of Colour of the Year on Emerald Green, described as “the colour of growth, renewal and prosperity”.

When having coffee with a designer/copywriter friend of mine I was discussing the serious case of writers block I have been suffering with lately when it comes to finding inspiration for Fashion Rich Money Poor. Or in this case: Bloggers Block.

If I may be so bold: my friend is one of the most stylishly ‘on-trend’ people I know and I draw a lot of my inspiration from her…she also (conveniently) reminds me of the fabulous Elle Fergusson, fashion blogger for the exceptional ‘They All Hate Us’ blog. Her inspiring suggestion was given to me in one word: EMERALD.

One of my favourite Australian chain stores that are doing this trend particularly well (in my own modest opinion) this season is Witchery, and below are the reasons why.

I am COVETING the silky goodness of their strapless maxi dress in a ‘geometric watercolour’ style print…my god I want it! But in the more practical section of the wardrobe spectrum is their emerald Cut Work Back Tank which has a gorgeous cut-out pattern across the back but is still classic enough to be casual chic, then of course you break it down to your everyday basic Space Dye Pleat Back tank which has just enough tailoring in the shape and cut to be basic but fabulously so.

I would be pairing anything emerald back with your classic neutrals (think chic white like the zip detailed White Skort below, nude, or even a glamorous metallic twist with silver – so hot right now!) and also with gorgeous navy blue – such as the Cheeky Patterned Shorts.

Emerald is the sort of beautiful balanced shade that looks stunning against ivory skin as well as striking with a tanned complexion, the colour itself symbolically brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.

So let’s get on board with Emerald ladies…after all…the merry old Land of Oz loved it, why shouldn’t you?

Emerald
